Kancho Hirokazu Kanazawa
Kancho Hirokazu Kanazawa, 10th Dan is one of the world's most renowned and respected traditional karate masters alive. He is the only karateka ever to have won the notorious All Japan karate Championships an incredible three times in a row. On one occasion he won the finals whilst nursing a broken hand from an earlier training session. Recently, his eldest son, Nobuaki has also won the All Japan Championships, preserving the family reputation. Although trained in Judo in his early years ( whilst in high school he held the 2nd degree rank), Kancho Kanazawa took up karate whilst at University under the late headmaster of J.K.A shotokan, sensei Matsatoshi Nakayama 10 th dan. Kancho Kanazawa is also one of the few remaining karateka privileged to have studied under Master Gichin Funakoshi, the famous Okinawin schoolteacher who brought karate to mainland Japan from Okinawa and founded the Shotokan style.  Iwate Prefecture It took Kancho Kanazawa one and a half years of disciplined training to attain the rank of 1st dan. After three years he gained the rank of 2nd dan , passing other members of the club who had started before him. In 1956 he passed the rank of 3rd dan and also completed the instructor course of the J.K.A. In 1957 Kancho Kanazawa won the first of his titles at the All Japan Championships. He got 1st place in the kumite event, Fighting with a broken hand. Kancho's mother had travelled from the country to watch him participate, and not wanting to disappoint her, he decided to enter at least one match. He had to have a senior from high school, who worked in a clinic, follow him at all times to make sure that the injured hand was not aggravated in any way during each match. In 1977, Kancho Kanazawa set up S.K.I.F (Shotokan Karatedo International Federation). S.K.I.F is now the world's largest Shotokan Karate Association under one chief instructor, having over 2.5 million members in over 100 countries. Kancho continues to travel the world, spreading the karate word and values, and we are priviledged to be visited by him at our dojo's in Scotland.
